Remember the money CA would save from furloughs? Not so much….
In the midst of California’s perpetual budget deficits, it sounded like a necessary evil when it was first proposed: furlough state workers for three days a month to save the state money. However, some jobs in California are too vital to go unfulfilled, and prison workers (especially prison healthcare workers) have been forced to “bank” furlough hours and continue working, which might end up costing the state more money than it had hoped to save. Is there any way out of the red in California?

Moderate revenue increases???? TAX RATE INCREASES...let''s call them what they are and stop candy coating them. Where are the taxes going to come from?? Me?? As long as we have the 2/3 requirement we can control spending

The problem is not raising more revenue. The problem is that too many new expenditures were added to the budget when California's unstable tax system had a huge, temporary surge in revenue.

This complaining about furlough days is naive. People in the private sector have lost their jobs or taken pay cuts without getting the days off.

Steinberg gives the same old line over and over again. Instead of raising our taxes he and Karen Bass need to start negotiating to cut the salaries and benefits of many of the state public employees. These public employees need to take the pain the rest of us in the private sector are enduring. They keep trying to protect state employees at the expense of the rest of the public in California. I am sick of it. All the time the Democratic legislators say we Californians want public services and are not willing to pay them. Where are they getting this idea ? Some bogus self serving polls ? No I for one am not willing to pay for prison healthcare workers & prison guards or others who make three times what I make because they and their unions get extremely high salaries and abuse overtime, etc while other state workers like teacher’s may suffer. Bravo Aaron Mclear. He is right on track. I think need to get rid of people like Darrell Steinberg and Karen Bass. They are going to destroy California to protect overpaid and overcompensated segments of the state public employee system.

I am personally offended by Steinberg and other Democrats when they use the term "working people" to identify certain people. He's clearly using the term to identify non-college educated/ non-white collar workers (I won't say lower or even middle income workers because many of these state workers, like prison guards, make six figures). Using the term "working people" suggests that all other people are not really "working." i.e. If you wear a suit and sit behind a desk, you're not really working. It is patently offensive!
