Meet the most controversial man west of the Mississippi, Sheriff Joe Arpaio

Arizona’s Joe Arpaio may indeed be America’s Toughest Sheriff but he is also among the most controversial sheriffs in all the land. What good does parading prisoners in pink underwear down hot pavement do? Where did the idea come from to turn condemned jails into no-kill animal shelters? How does he feel about getting the cold shoulder from I.C.E.? Would these tactics fly in the City of Angels? Patt talks to the five term Sheriff and takes your calls.

Gee, maybe Arpaio's policies---like so many public policy things we do in California---will encourage the criminals to come HERE for better treatment--- So that you, others, and I, Patt, can incur increasing costs---direct and indirect---money-type and tragedy-type for years/lifetimes to come....

If he had the power, how would Sheriff Joe reform this broken system? Surely he doesn't think deporting 12 million people is a remote possibility? How do we find a workable solution to this serious problem?

This man is cruel, horrible, and ironically, unlawful.

Besides your "tactics" encouraging racial profiling, other law enforcement have stated clearly that your "tactics" are ineffective in fighting crime in make the 100% US Citizen population less safe. These include the Los Angels and Phoenix Police Chief. How do you justify continuing your methods after being criticized by so many of your peers?

Eli,
How about we stop subsidizing the corrupt government/business interests in Mexico and other Central America? LIBERALS/PROGRESSIVES ARE SO FOND OF "REFORM". If illegals had less incentive to come here, maybe there'd be more pressure for REFORM IN THE SOURCE COUNTRIES OF THE LARGEST NUMBERS OF ILLEGALS. How about we reverse the stupid policies that promote "this broken system"? E.g., birthright citizenship. sanctuary cities, lax government aid of all sorts for illegals, lax enforcement of employers' employment of illegals, etc., etc?

I see that the FBI is Probing Arpaio For "Investigating" Political Foes. How is it that he continues to hold his job as Sheriff with all of his questionable activity> Not too long ago he made it clear that he uses racial profiling. Now this: http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/11/report_fbi_probing_arpaio_for_targeting_political.php?ref=mp

I don't understand why Sheriff Joe sees it as his responsibility to enforce administrative law over criminal law. Does he understand the difference or understand the problems with racial profiling? It seems to me that his crusade against immigrants undermines his department's ability to investigate and combat crime in his county. Why would anyone living there want to collaborate with the Sheriff's department if they could be deported?

I am a former resident of Phoenix, AZ. Sheriff Joe, may say that the people elected him; I hope this state changes very soon in AZ, as more and more Arizonians begin to see the darkness in his reckless, disregard, profiling; his racist actions.
We are losing a great chief here in Los Angeles, one who exemplifies what his men take to task and holds high the basis, "SERVICE with COMPASSION". A peace officer, Chief Bratton exercised the law with great concern for his fellow Angeles families; the great, the small, even those who are in a tough immigration climate right now but still, are a contributing part of our communities.
Sheriff Joe has nothing in common with this pinnacle of a peace officer. He runs his men like the Gestapo.
Maricopa County families deserve better than he and his disregard for humanity; a disgrace to the very badge of law.
Have you considered a different career Sheriff Joe? How about underwater basket weaving?
p.s. - before you soil yourself by classifying me an immigrant, I am an over 50, born in the U.S., Caucasian male, who despises what you stand for. Go home and find a new job; run for Governor; that will be an easy win for your opponent.

Oh yeah.... there's some sort of "darkness and recklessness" in catching invaders and deporting their parasitic butts. WTF? All illegal aliens are criminals and leeches. This is one sheriff who is actually enforcing the law, and more power to him. Keep on keepin' on, Joe!

How can you tell what an "illegal alien" looks like, Joe?
2 weeks, 4 days ago
Let's see 1,600 illegal aliens who committed crimes *and those are they that should be there), 60 of which are murders. Hmmm 12.7 MILLION undocumented, boy chief, that is certainly a significant percentage!
This man's evil and darkness go far beyond racism, profiling or undocumented. He is being investigated for illegal tactics against Arizona citizens who dare to defy his reign. His ethical dishonor goes far, far below this level.
And thank the Lord that this evil man is not Sheriff here. We would be back to the bad old days when good ole boys ran things!
It will be a real pleasure to see this man go behind those same bars and wear pink briefs. How about a pole-dance Sheriff!

He's a racist. I'm sorry Patt gave him a pass.

apio is a nut-case. i lived in phoenix in the late 90's. his accounting of how much $$ was paid out to lawsuits is short of crazy. MILLIONS of $$ have been paid.
he locks up kids, moms with children, without due process for being family members of wanted "criminals". its goes on and on. just do a google of the phoenix republic and the new times. the people that vote him in are largely the snow-birds, who are the bane of the locals.

This man is a fanatic and a vigilante. I especially disliked the barb he took at the newspaper all the while pretending he wasn't attacking the newspaper. He really should be joining his inmates--he's just as much a criminal and a cruel one at that.

Crime suppression is not investigating the mayor and the city council.
So arpio breaks the law enforcing it? Clearly racial profiling is illegal.

How about some human rights and dignity for all? Not based on skin color or national identity. They didn't cross the border, the border crossed them. No human is illegal! Arpaio is an embarrassment to the U.S. legal system and any attempt towards the common good.

Gee, after reading the above comments, I see that Sheriff Apaio hit a nerve. I think a good topic for discussion should be how the Liberal/Left teamed up with Chamber of Commerce/Capital interests to destroy the working class by flooding the country with cheap illegal labor. Because this is what this is about. Money and power. The naive may think It's about racial profiling, human dignity (something rarely discussed among the police of Mexico, Guatatmala, etc) Destroying Unions and forcing our unskilled citizens to take less and less. Pushing them into poverty because they can't compete with the cheap foreign labor here or the cheap labor in countries like China. But I guess none of these commenters are in a union or worked in a factory. Ms. Morrison obviously isn't worried about an "illegal" taking her job. She has the luxury of an educated white woman of being ever so compassionate. Plus the damn redneck working class votes Republican. Maybe that's why educated Left hates the working class so much. Mexico wouldn't think twice about arresting and deporting anyone illegally there. Unless you have some cash for the bribe. I know, I've done it.

Sovereignty
someone should do something about immigration. Our infrastructure can't handle it. Look what happened to the housing market.
