Debate on Prop 89-Campaign Finance Reform

As campaign season wraps up with final injections of campaign cash, Californians get to consider a new way of funding the political process. Proposition 89 would raise taxes on corporations and use the new funds for eligible political candidates. The measure would also put new limits on campaign donations. Is this the path for funding the campaigns of the future? We'll hear from both sides of the debate.

activist pushed for landmark reforms on vehicle emissions and alternate fuels. Now, he's written a book on how the nation can break its "lethal oil addiction."

Bill Bryson, The Life and Times of Thunderbolt Kid

Des Moines, Iowa may not sound like the most exciting place for a young boy growing up in the 1950s, but author Bill Bryson proves different in his latest book, The Life and Times of Thunderbolt Kid (Broadway Books). In a comical memoir about growing up during postwar America, Bryson recreates his childhood amid quirky observations of a changing nation.

Esperanza Fire Update

Three firefighters were killed and two critically injured today while battling a wildfire that has driven hundreds of people from their homes and left hundreds more unable to evacuate. The fire, pushed by dry Santa Ana Winds of 25 miles an hour, quickly blackened more than 4000 acres and destroyed at least three homes. At least one civilian was injured and at least 200 in the small communities of Poppett Flats and Twin Falls have fled their homes. Patt gets the latest.

Little Hope in Esperanza Fire Battle

While fire crews continue to struggle to contain a wildfire in the Cabazon area that trapped and killed four firefighters yesterday, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department is conducting an aggressive investigation of possible arson in the blaze. Guest host Ted Chen gets an update from the scene.
