StoryCorps

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives.

The StoryCorps crew visited the California African American History Museum in LA's Exposition Park this Spring to capture oral histories for a national archive at the American Folk Life Center at the Library of Congress. While in Los Angeles, StoryCorps focused on the Griot Initiative, a project aimed at recording African American experiences and life stories. Griot (pronounced GREE-oh) is a storyteller and a position of honor in West African tradition.

In addition to the Griot project, StoryCorps captured interviews from undocumented immigrants across the United States as part of their Every Voice Initiative. In 2010, StoryCorps brought their Historias Initiative capturing the stories of the Southland's Latinos to the East Los Angeles Library.

StoryCorps invites people to connect with one another through the power of their own words and experiences, so share yours! If you have a reaction to any of the interviews you've heard, leave a comment. We want to hear from you. The stories that result celebrate our shared humanity.
