Merle Haggard has been called one the most influential singer songwriters in country music history. But he's never been called Doctor, at least until now. Cal State Bakersfield recently awarded him its first honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts, recognizing his contribution to the "Bakersfield Sound."

The California Report's Alice Daniel shares his story and that of another honoree, Buck Owens, also an architect of the raw music style.
