Monday, February 11
Omar Bradley Reinstated as Compton Mayor
Claiming that last year's mayoral election was marked by fraud, a Friday ruling reinstated Omar Bradley as the Mayor of Compton. Kitty speaks with Ed McCaffrey, the director of the Center for Law and Politics at USC/Caltech, and the KPCC reporter following the story, Adolfo Guzman Lopez, about the ruling, reaction in Compton, and former mayor Eric Perrodin­s promised appeal.

Are California Redwoods at Risk?
Sudden Oak Syndrome has killed thousands of oaks and other trees in California, and, according to reports, may even be threatening the mighty redwood. Kitty speaks with arborist Jan Scow and plant pathologist Dave Rizzo, one of two main pathologists working on Sudden Oak Death in California, about the pathogens that could be causing the tree disease. Rizzo recommended the following information on Sudden Oak Death.

Kitty speaks with Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn about his decision to not support LAPD Chief Bernard Park­s bid for reelection.

Novelist and Screenwriter Susan Minot
Screenwriter (Stealing Beauty) and novelist Susan Minot joins Kitty to discuss the unusual premise of her latest work, the book Rapture, which details the inner thoughts of a couple en flagrente and highlights their very different interpretations of their coupling. Tuesday, February 12
Milosevic going to trial
Facing a total of 66 counts accusing him of genocide and war crimes in Bosnia and crimes against humanity in Croatia and Kosovo, former Yugoslav leader, Slobodan Milosevic, is set to begin his war crimes trial in front of a UN tribunal. Kitty speaks with a reporter at the Hague, Lauren Comiteau, and with the former US Attorney and current special council to the LA City Attorney, Terree Bowers.

Oscar Nominations
Josh Spector, who covers film for the Hollywood Reporter, joins Kitty to go over the highlights of this mornings' announcement of the nominees for the 74th annual Academy Awards.

A Conversation Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Director of Amelie
Kitty speaks with Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the director of such films as City of Lost Children, Delicatessen, and most recently, Amelie which was just nominated for five Oscars.

Students from Immaculate Heart High School Interview LAPD Chief Parks
On the heels of Mayor Hahn­s opposition to LAPD Police Chief Bernard Parks­ bid for reelection and subsequent reaction from community leaders and activists, Parks takes an opportunity to be interviewed by students from Immaculate Heart High School on everything from the reelection bid controversy to boosting morale in the LAPD and effective community policing.

The Vine of Desire
Kitty speaks with author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni about her latest book, The Vine of Desire, her sequel to Sister of My Heart.

Foster Care: Is LA County Granting Too Many Waivers?
Talk of the City­s continuing series on Foster Care kicks off its second installment today when County Supervisor Zev Yaroslovsky and head of the Department of Children and Family Services Anita Bock elaborate on the thorny question of social worker caseloads and the alleged abuse of waivers that the Supervisor is seeking to have regulated by the courts.

A Social Workers' Perspective: The Reality of Caseload Management
Kitty convenes a round table of child social workers and their supervisors to look at the reality of "caseload overload " and how county workers on the frontlines are managing up to 58 families each. Tika Smith, a line supervisor with the Department of Children and Family Services, Randy Gracia, a social worker with the Department, and Danny Ramos Senior, a Field Representative with the Social Services Union, all take part in the discussion.

Friday, February 15
The Politics of Polls
Do exit polls affect the outcome of elections? Do unscientific polls skew public opinion? A conference of scholars is convening on President's Day to answer these questions. Matt Streb, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Loyola Marymount Univeristy, convened the conference and joins Kitty for an overview on the effects of political polling. Open to the public, the Dilemmas of Democracy conference takes place in the Ahmanson Auditorium at LMU on Feb. 18. Lectures include, "The President, The Media and Public Opinion: Who Follows Who?" from 1-3pm and "Democracy, the Public and the Polls" from 4:30-6:30pm. For more information, call 310-338-7706.

Travel Through the States and Europe
This Saturday and Sunday (Feb 16 & 17) is the 2002 LA Times Travel Convention at the Long Beach Convention Center. Kitty speaks with two of the featured guests, Rick Steves of the PBS-TV series, ²Rick Steves­ EuropeÓ and author of the guide Europe through the Back Door, and Jamie Jensen, author of Road Trip USA. The Los Angeles Times Travel Show will be held in the Long Beach Convention Center from 10-5pm on Saturday and 10-4pm on Sunday. Tickets will be sold at the door, admission is $6.00.

Wait, Wait, It's Peter Sagal
Peter Sagal, host of NPR­s quiz show, Wait, Wait..Don­t Tell Me joins Kitty for a preview of his live program on Thursday, February 28, at 7:30pm in Beckman Auditorium at The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
