Jihad by Ahmed Rashid
After September 11th, many Americans scrambled to make sense of the turmoil in distant lands that would reverberate on U.S. soil. Many turned to Ahmed Rashid­s book Taliban to get a better understanding on the political structure of Afghanistan. His new book is Jihad. Ahmed Rashid joins host Kitty Felde in discussion about the political turmoil of the countries of Central Asia.

Author James McBride
On the heels of the huge success of his nonfiction memoir, The Color of Water, author James McBride joins Kitty for a discussion of his latest novel, Miracle at St. Anna, about black American soldiers fighting the German army in December 1944 around the village of St. Anna of Stazzema in the mountains of Italy.

Pulitzer Prize winning author Richard Ford joins Kitty for a discussion of his latest collection of stories, A Multitude of Sins.

Russian Classical Music Archives
A trove of Russian classical music archives initially amassed over 50 years ago and then forgotten about deep inside a Russian vault are finally being released to the public by Pipeline Music. The collection, much of which has never been heard, includes thousands of live orchestral performances from artists like Rachmaninoff, Richter and Rostopovich. Kitty talks to Pipeline President and Grammy award winning record producer, Denny Diante, about the acquisition of the archive and painstaking restoration process. Foster Care Series: Family Care v. Foster Care
Here in LA, relatives such as grandparents take care of more than 50 percent of children removed from their homes. Yet programs and services for these kinds of foster families are being reduced and thousands of dollars of state funds earmarked for such support are being returned to Sacramento. Meanwhile Orange County, while ineligible for such funds due to smaller numbers, has an impressive array of programs and services. We­ll find out why. Plus, we­ll look at grandparents as parents with Joel Jessen who has lived with his grandparents since age 9 and Wanda Cooper who is guardian of her 4-year old grandson. Kitty speaks with former Vice Chairman of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA, Graham Fuller, about US policy and the administration­s role in the Middle East on the heels of President Bush­s speech this morning.

Author Howard Means collects collectors, you could say, and he joins Kitty to look at some of the most extraordinary collectors in the world featured in his new book, The Banana Sculptor, the Purple Lady, and the All-Night Swimmer: Hobbies, Collecting, and other Passionate Pursuits. Featured collector and LA resident Henry Sakaida is in studio to discuss his hobby of reconnecting former combatants in WW II dogfights - 80 reunions and counting. The Art of Horse Breeding
Kitty talks with Kevin Conley, a New Yorker editor and the author of Stud: Adventures in Breeding, a look inside the strange and seductive world of horse breeding. The interview is especially timely as Saturday is the Santa Anita Derby, a day of thoroughbred racing with a purse of $750,000 and the claim to fame of having featured in the last four years three Kentucky Derby winners. Kitty also talks to Trudy McCaffrey, a thoroughbred breeder and owner whose horse 'Came Home' will run in the derby.

Kerry Mazzoni: CA Secretary of Education
Kitty talks education with the California Secretary of Education, Kerry Mazzoni, who advises Governor Davis on all policy matters relating to California­s system of public schools, colleges and universities.

Book Club of the Air for Young Adults: Dragonwings by Laurence Yep
Kitty convenes a group of students from Lindero Canyon Middle School in Agoura Hills to discuss this month­s Book Club of the Air selection, Dragonwings by Laurence Yep. Chinese-American playwright David Henry Hwang also reads a selection from the story.
