African Americans and Post 9/11 Patriotismô..
ô.will be just one of the topics Kitty will tackle with Lani Gunier, civil rights expert, Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania and onetime Clinton nominee to the post of Attorney General for civil rights. Guinier is in town to put forth her controversial argument that ²color-blindÓ solutions are not ²attaining racial justice and ensuring a healthy democratic process." Arguing for a multifaceted conception of "biological race, political race, historical race, cultural race," Guinier is for moving toward a society that values (rather than just tolerates) difference. Her latest book, along with Gerald Torres, is The Miner's Canary: Enlisting Race, Resisting Power, Transforming Democracy.

Is There a Nursing Crisis is Southern California? A Health Dialogues Special
Late January Governor Davis announced his plan for establishing minimum nurse-to-patient ratios in California hospitals. Once the rules go into effect, California will be the first state to establish minimum nursing staffing standards in the nation. The news is good for nurses and patients, but how can California hospitals meet these requirements in the midst of a nursing shortage, and financial difficulties?
Kitty speaks with a panel of guests: Katherine Iorio, an Emergency Room Nurse at a local trauma center; Debbie Rowlett, a former hospital floor nurse who is now a laser hair removal technician; Jill Furillo, the Director of Government Relations for California Nurses Association; Jim Lott, the Executive Vice President of Healthcare Association of Southern California; Kathleen Winston, Director of the Nursing Program at Pasadena City College; Judy Papen Hausen, Director of the California Association of Colleges of Nursing; and two current nursing students, Roberto Mulato from LACC and Susan Holley from PCC. The guests recommended two web sites for information on nursing school scholarships: Discover Nursing and Registered Nursing California Associate Degree program.
