Monday, August 5
Study on Lending
A recent USC study noted efforts to increase lending in low-income neighborhoods dries up in a matter of a few years. Kitty Felde speaks with USC Professor Raphael Bostic from the School of Policy, Planning, and Development, about his findings.

DONE Congress
This past weekend, neighborhood councils convened for a Congress. Kitty gets an update with the general manager of Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE), Greg Nelson. Are neighborhood councils being heard by City Hall? Has the secession movement fostered greater responsiveness?

Wilco Documentary
Kitty speaks with Sam Jones, the director of the new documentary film, I­m Trying to Break Your Heart, which followed the band Wilco while recording their fourth album, ²Yankee Hotel FoxtrotÓ.
I am Trying to Break Your Heart is now playing at the Nuart in West LA. It will open in Pasadena at UA Marketplace and in Orange County at University Town Center this Friday, August 9.

Writer Elizabeth Kaye, author of Ain­t No Tomorrow: Kobe, Shaq, and the Making of the Lakers Dynasty, remembers the legendary Laker announcer Chick Hearn.

Bows and Bow Wows
Last week­s audit of LA­s Animal Services department made national headlines with its unintentionally humorous recommendation that grooming and dressing up dogs and even cats will ²facilitateÓ speedy and increased adoptions. But for a cash-strapped agency that houses about 1,000 orphaned animals every day there are far greater needs than neckerchiefs according to general manager Jerry Greenwalt. Kitty speaks to LA city controller Laura Chick to hear the details of the audit and then gets reaction from Jerry Greenwalt, general manager of LA's Animal Services department. We'll also see how Orange County­s animal services are coping with the same issues with guest Dr. Julie Ryan Johnson, director of the Orange County Department of Animal Services.

Mai­s America
Mai is a smart, vivacious and resilient Vietnamese teenager, an exchange student in the US sent from North Vietnam. Her experiences, documented on PBS­ POV program tonight turn upside down any stereotypical East meets West encounter one may expect. Sent to live in a trailer park, Mai­s dreams of American success contrast sharply with her surroundings. Kitty speaks with Mai, who is now back in Vietnam, and with the films director, Marlo Poras, about her high expectations and the unexpected outcome of Mai­s journey.

Kitty speaks with Sacramento Bee columnist Dan Walters on the latest news happening in our state capital.

Balancing State Budgets-Lessons Learned
As California languishes with an unbalanced budget, Kitty Felde looks at what other states have done to resolve budget deadlocks. Kitty Felde speaks with Executive Director of the National Association of State Budget Officers, Scott Pattison, about creative solutions to the age-old crisis of balancing the budget. Also, with a look at how California balances its budget (or not) is Jenny Oropeza, Democratic Assemblywoman for the 55th and chair of the Assembly Budget Committee.

Falling
One in three people over 65 falls each year. Falls are known in geriatric medicine as precipitating events leading to more severe health issues and lifestyle changes. Increasingly, insurance companies are making it more difficult to get coverage after a fall. Chick Hearn­s fall this weekend is the latest example of a worst case scenario for a senior who falls. We­ll look at research being done locally to help the elderly prevent falls and what to do if a fall occurs with Dr. Lawrence Rubenstein, professor of geriatric medicine at UCLA and director of Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center at Sepulveda VA Medical Center.

Envy - the second sin in our series on the seven deadly. Kitty explores the historical and theological definitions of envy and why it became one of the seven deadly sins with Rabbi Neal Weinberg of the University of Judaism. Then we take a look at what we are calling the ugly side of envy - Schadenfreude, taking pleasure in the misfortune of others with Dr. Robert deMayo, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Psychological and Educational Clinic at Pepperdine University.

Twelve
Every once in a while a writer comes along with a novel that captures the soul of their generationô.is Nick McDonell one of them? The Harvard-bound high school grad with publishing connections joins Kitty to discuss how his first novel Twelve may or may not be the soundpiece of an emerging generation.

Historic Districts
Does your neighborhood have an interesting history? How is it a neighborhood becomes ²historicÓ? What are the benefits? And, how can you promote the interesting history of your neighborhood to become a historic district? Kitty Felde asks these questions and more as she maps the path to preparing a historic preservation plan with a panel of preservation experts. Guests include: Roberta Deering, Executive Director of the California Preservation Foundation; Jeffrey Samudio, Managing Partner at Design Aid Architects; Christy McAvoy, Managing Principal at Historic Resources Group; and, Sally Schacht, Historic Resources Commissioner for the City of Whittier.
