Fraud and Misinformation on the Internet

Received any email requests from Nigeria asking for money lately? To date, there are 416 different versions of the Nigerian scam letters (called the “419” scam), business proposals designed to get you to part with hundreds or thousands of dollars in return for millions. Each year, amazingly, thousands of victims pay out with never a cent in return. Guest Jayne Hitchcock, a cybercrime expert, explains how we can protect ourselves from online scams like the Nigerian letters in addition to more serious crimes like on-line predators, cyberstalking and identity theft. She is also the author of Crimes and Misdemeanors (CyberAge). Arif Alikhan, Chief of the Computer Crimes Section for the United States Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California also joins the discussion.
The following 2 websites are places where you can report email scams: Internet Fraud Complaint Center and www.spamcop.net.
