OC Arco Settlement

Oil giant Arco agreed last week to spend millions of dollars cleaning up contamination beneath 143 gas stations that threaten Orange County’s drinking water supply. Is this a landmark settlement for communities trying to hold oil companies accountable, or is it a missed opportunity for millions more in environmental funds? Kitty speaks with Orange County D.A., Tony Rackauckas, and former senior deputy district attorney and lead attorney assigned to the Arco case for nearly four years, Michelle Lyman.
Shadow Enemies

One of Hitler’s little known plans was to wreak havoc in America's cities through the hands of carefully trained German agents who planned to bomb selected targets in cities nationwide. Thankfully, the agents were apprehended on Long Island before their plans could be put into effect. Their subsequent trial has set legal precedents still used today, especially in 9-11 related cases. Kitty talks to Scott Gordon and Alex Abella, the authors of a new book on the topic called Shadow Enemies (Lyons Press).

DOJ Opens Investigation

Prosecutors are investigating whether the nation’s two largest newspaper chains violated federal and state antitrust laws when they closed competing publications here in Los Angeles. Sworn testimonies will be taken through the first week of January. KPCC commentator Mark Haefele, a former LA Weekly employee, will be one of those deposed.

Cervical Cancer Vaccine?

Dr. Sharon Wilcynski joins Kitty to explain the connection between HPV 16 and cervical cancer. A vaccine against HPV recently was reported to be very effective against infection. If additional studies continue to show that it is effective and safe, most cases of cervical cancer could be wiped out in the coming decades. Who should get it? Should it be limited to women?
