Supermarket Strike? (Listen)
ItÕs been 25 years since the last supermarket strike in Southern California, but WalmartÕs foray into groceries may well cause the union to call for a strike as soon as next week. Kitty gets the latest with LA Times labor reporter Nancy Cleeland.

Also, today in Burbank, the executive board of the state Republican Party selected their nomination for the Republican candidate for governor. CA GOP spokesman Mike Wintemute says itÕs official, they support Arnold Schwartzenegger.

Mural Restoration (Listen)
If you were driving on one of a number of LA freeways late Friday or Saturday night, you might have noticed closed lanes and work crews camped out in front of LAÕs most famous murals. This weekend marked the beginning of the long process to restore as many as forty of LAÕs most visible works of art Ð a project that has been delayed for three months due to the state budget crisis. Nathan Zakheim, a conservationist and director of Nathan Zakheim Associates, was contracted to restore the LA Marathon Mural on the 405 Freeway at Manchester among several others.

Nilo CruzÕs Anna in the Tropics (Listen)
2003 Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Nilo Cruz joins Kitty to talk about his play Anna in the Tropics currently on stage at South Coast Repertory. Cruz is the first Latino to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

The African American Vote (Listen)
Where will African-American voters place their votes in the upcoming recall election? Kermin Maddox, John Mack and other black leaders have publicly complained that the African American community has been ignored by the Democratic candidates in this election. Today, the Los Angeles Sentinel along with other California black media outlets plan to issue their endorsements as a group for the recall election. Kitty talks to James Bolden, Managing Editor of the Los Angeles Sentinel, and columnist and author Anthony Asadullah Samad about their differing views on how African Americans will vote next week.

Orbital Space Plane (Listen)
The shuttle disaster raised serious concerns about using outdated technology for space flight. Yesterday, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin announced that they would join forces to build an orbital space plane to replace the shuttle. Kitty Felde speaks with ex-astronaut and three-time pilot of the Space Shuttle, Mike Coats, Vice President of Lockheed MartinÕs Advanced Space Transportation.

The LA Registrar of voters Conny McCormack joins Kitty to discuss the logistics of voting on October 7. Will the poll lines be extra long? When will the vote counts be in?

Mark Ridley-Thomas (Listen)
The former city councilmember now Assembly member is determined to make recalls as we know them a thing of the past. His proposed amendment to the state Constitution would increase the number of signatures that petitioners must obtain, and would automatically replace a recalled governor with the lieutenant governor.

First Fiction: Novelist Jhumpa Lahiri (Listen)
Author Jhumpa Lahiri joins Kitty to talk about her debut novel, The Namesake (Houghton Mifflin). The book comes on the heels of LahiriÕs best selling short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies, which won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

The Station Agent (Listen)
The movie ÒThe Station AgentÓ opens Friday in Los Angeles. Writer/Director Tom McCarthy wrote the lead role in the movie for Peter Dinklage, a dwarf. In the film, Dinklage tries to maintain a life of solitude, but becomes unwittingly caught up in the lives of his neighbors, actors Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale.
