Rain and Mud (Listen)
Rain is expected tonight throughout the southland which spells trouble for areas of San Bernadino county that were plagued by the recent wildfires and Christmas-day mudslides. Kitty talks to Peter Brierty, fire marshal for the county of San Bernardino, about the risk of mudslides and any planned evacuations in the area.

Fritz Coleman (Listen)
Fritz Coleman, weekday weathercaster for channel 4, lets us know if rain is really in the forecast for Southern California and particularly San Bernadino County where mudslides could once again turn deadly.

Reform of Homeland Security Color-Coded Terror Alert System (Listen)
Representative Christopher Cox joins Kitty to discuss lawmakers' suggested changes to the Homeland Security terror alert system, including proposed warnings based on specific regions or industries. Cox is the chairman of the House Select Committee on Homeland Security.

H.W. Brands on Woodrow Wilson (Listen)
This past Sunday marked the birthday of the United States twenty-eighth President, Woodrow Wilson. Celebrated historian and gifted storyteller H.W. Brands joins Kitty Felde to talk about the life and legacy of the former President in his new book, Woodrow Wilson (Times Books).

Orange County Register Theater Critic Paul Hodgins and San Diego Union-Tribune Senior Editor Chris Lavin go head to head on why sports coverage dominates arts and entertainment coverage in the newspaper. Homicide Rate Declines (Listen)
After bearing the infamous title of the murder capitol of the country last year, homicides in the city of Los Angeles have decreased this year by 20% which leaves Los Angeles in third place behind New York and Chicago. Kitty talks with Los Angeles police chief William Bratton and Los Angeles county sheriff Lee Baca about the decline in homicides, what caused it and how other crimes have fared this past year.

Mutiny on the Bounty (Listen)
Author Caroline Alexander steps back in time and tells the story of the mutiny against Captain William Bligh. Kitty Felde speaks with author Caroline Alexander about her book The Bounty: The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty (Viking).

Battle of the Bands (Listen)
Today concludes the two-day Tournament of the Roses Bandfest, performances from the marching bands that will be featured in the Rose Bowl parade. Kitty talks with the band director and two musicians participating in today's performances. The band director, David Gorham, and musicians, Ashley Chapel and Nick Smith, are representing Owassa High school in Oklahoma.

The recall election, the grocery and MTA strike, the wildfires--these are some of the most memorable news stories that happened in Southern California this past year. But there are plenty more. Kitty speaks with KPCC reporters Rachael Myrow, Frank Stoltze, John Rabe, Ilsa Setziol and Adolfo Guzman Lopez.

Bob McGrath (Listen)
Although you may not recognize the name Bob McGrath, you have certainly seen his face and heard his voice on Sesame Street where he has played the music teacher on that program for the past 34 years. Tomorrow McGrath will be one of the participants on the NAAM (The International Music Products Association)/Sesame Street float in the Rose Bowl parade. The theme of the float is "Believe in Music", and McGrath and others are ambassadors for a grass roots campaign called support music launched to keep music in schools.

Mars (Listen)
Mars is back in the spotlight as a trio of landers, the British incommunicado Beagle and two NASA probes, target the red planet. Kitty Felde speaks with writer Laurence Bergreen about NASA's struggle to explore the distant planet. His book is Voyage to Mars (Riverhead Books).

Works on Paper (Listen)
Oscar-winning lyricist Hal David and his wife Eunice have amassed a collection of 60 drawings by 48 European and American artists. The collection is now on view at the UCLA Hammer museum through February 8. The couple leads Kitty on a tour through the drawings.

Flying Series (Listen)
Kitty Felde speaks with former flight attendant and designer of airline safety cards, Carl Reese, about his extensive collection of flight safety cards. His book is Design for Impact (Princeton Architectural Press).

O.C. Beef Recall (Listen)
More than a thousand pounds of beef were recalled from an Orange County supermarket. Officials say the recalled beef may have come in contact with the infamous Washington state cow infected with Vovine Songiform Encephalopathy. Kitty speaks with the Orange County Health Care Agency Public Health Officer, Dr. Mark Horton.

Water in Waterman? (Listen)
Not likely says the National Weather Service. Although a storm is expected, it looks that like it will produce more snow than rain. Kitty gets the latest.

New Laws (Listen)
January 1 rang in the New Year and about 900 new laws that will affect Californians. Kitty talks with the Sacramento Bee's Jim Sanders about everything from increasing the refundable fee paid by consumers on recyclable containers to tightening restrictions on drivers who watch video and TV screens while operating their vehicles.

Planetary Society Celebrates Mars Landing (Listen)
This weekend, the planetary society will host "Wild About Mars" to coincide with the touchdown of NASA's Spirit Rover on the red planet Saturday evening. The program features a host of speakers including Ray Bradbury, Buzz Aldrin and Bill Nye the science guy among others. Kitty talks with Bruce Betts from the Planetary Society about the significance of the landing and about the reaction if Spirit unfortunately suffers the same fate as the British Beagle.

The Planetary Society presents "Wild About Mars" at the Pasadena Convention Center, 300 East Green Street, on Saturday 6-11 p.m. and Sunday from 3:00-6:30 p.m. For more information, call 877-PLA-NETS.
