Monday, March 20

Overdose Death Prevention (Listen)
Since 1990, deaths caused by overdose are up an alarming 73% in the state of California. In fact, drug overdose is a leading cause of premature death in Los Angeles County, surpassing deaths from strokes, diabetes and even HIV. Despite the magnitude of this problem, it gets little attention. Host John Rabe attended the Los Angeles Overdose Prevention Summit on March 15th and talked to a variety of people about this distressing issue.

New President of Drew University (Listen)
Dr. Susan Kelly has her work cut out for her. Last week she was named as the new head of the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science that trains doctors for the Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center in Willowbrook. She will be the first non-minority leader of the university that has been embroiled in accreditation woes in recent years. John Rabe talks with Dr. Kelly about her upcoming challenges and plans to re-vamp the university.

Canters Turns 75 (Listen)
Legendary twenty-four hour deli, Canter’s, thanks its loyal customers for seventy-five years of business today. Jacqueline Canter joins John Rabe from the bustling delicatessen on Fairfax to talk about how her family’s restaurant has survived as an LA-icon for three quarters of a century.

Minimalist Music (Listen)
Artists, musicians and fans began gathering late last week for a music festival presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The groundbreaking event will feature a comprehensive survey of Minimalism, under the attentive guidance of John Adams, Minimalist JukeBox Festival Director. Host John Rabe speaks with Adams, as well as Craig Curtis, KPCC’s Program Director and former classical music programmer in Washington DC and Minneapolis, about music and the minimalist movement.

Marco Firebaugh (Listen)
Former Democratic Assemblyman Marco Firebaugh, who represented southeast Los Angeles from 1998 to 2004, died today after a long battle with liver disease. He was 39 years old. Friend and colleague Frank Quevedo, vice president at Southern California Edison, joins us with a remembrance.

Exit Exam Blues (Listen)
State law says that high school students must pass a standardized exit exam before receiving their diplomas, and this is the last week seniors can pass this test in time to graduate in June. John Rabe talks with Terri Burke, a math teacher at Arroyo Valley High School who helps students prepare for the test; Michael Cook, a senior at Washington Preparatory High who is hoping to pass the math portion of the exam tomorrow; and Seema Mehta, education reporter for the LA Times.

Medical Reporting: What’s on Local TV News (Listen)
Did you hear the one about how lemon juice can be used as a substitute for HIV medications? If so, you may have been watching your local television news. You aren’t alone either. Local TV news is the number one source of information for most Americans. And, according to a recent report, some of the health-related coverage is misleading or outright wrong. KPCC's John Rabe hosts a discussion on just how health information is conveyed by TV news stations. He talks with Ken Goldstein, Political Science Professor at the University of Wisconsin, co-author of the study; Michelle Levander, Program Director at the Annenberg School for Communication at USC; and Dr. Bruce Hensel, Health Reporter, KNBC-4.

James McManus Gets Physical (Listen)
Author, teacher and poker player, James McManus, joins host John Rabe to talk about his recently published book, Physical: An American Checkup (Farrar Straus Giroux). McManus subjects himself to an in-depth clinical visit, which leads to a broader examination of the state of health care in the US, stem cell research and ultimately, his own mortality.

Students Walk Out to Protest Immigration Bill (Listen)
Hundreds of students from various high schools staged a walkout today to protest an immigration bill before Congress that would strengthen enforcement of immigration laws. KPCC reporter Adolfo Guzman Lopez was there.

LA County Homeless Prevention Plan Unveiled (Listen)
The county weighs in on the issue of the homeless with a new plan that would establish five regional shelters. John Rabe talks about the specifics of the new plan with LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Orlando Ward of the midnight mission and Steve Lopez of the Los Angeles Times.

Universal’s Master Plan (Listen)
NBC Universal sits on 400 acres that are home to the Hollywood theme park, CityWalk, movie and television studios, and their historic backlot. The conglomerate has announced that over the next six months it will create a long-term vision for the property. Tom Smith, senior vice president at NBC Universal; James Thomas, founder of Thomas Properties; and Patrick Garner, founder of the Toluca Lake Resident's Association, discuss the issues.

Miyazaki on DVD (Listen)
Animation has managed to secure a prominent position among the leading industries in Japan and supplies roughly 60% of the animation shown on television and in theaters around the world. Hayao Miyazaki, also known as the "Japanese Walt Disney," picked up experience in both TV and animated films for theatres, and then focused on highly artistic and imaginative works. Three of his critically acclaimed films have been released on DVD for the first time in the US.
