Donald Trump failed to make conventions great again

The most popular reality show on TV this week may have been the Republican National Convention. The four nights of live coverage had plenty of drama. We can only assume that none of it was scripted. But then again, GOP nominee Donald Trump is a reality show veteran, having been the star and executive producer of “The Apprentice” and “Celebrity Apprentice.”

Despite the drama and the prospect of a Trump explosion, it looks like the ratings for his acceptance speech were just slightly higher than Mitt Romney’s in 2012. And they were well short of John McCain’s numbers in 2008.

To assess the plot points and character dynamics of the GOP convention coverage, we thought we’d call on Slate TV critic Willa Paskin.
