The Breakdown | Explaining Southern California's economy

Bullet Points: Is the grocery workers' new contract a good deal?

Details on the new contract that the UFCW and the major California grocery chains negotiated — and that the union's membership has now approved — are still somewhat sketchy. I'm going to try to find out exactly what the numbers are, but in the meantime, here's a quick breakdown.

On balance, this strikes me as a good compromise. But since 2007, the union has been giving stuff away, although each time it has made a strategic calculation about what and why. To me, this signals that the union is aiming for solutions rather than serving up confrontation. Plus, it appears that both sides are adapting to the realties of their dwindling piece of the overall grocery marketplace.
