LA's mayor and police chief said today that more than 2,500 firearms were taken off the streets over the weekend, thanks to a program which allowed people to surrender guns in exchange for gift cards -- no questions asked. According to Police Chief Charlie Beck: "This was an anonymous, guilt-free turning in of weapons. We do not ask who brought these guns in, nor do we care. It was enough to get these guns off the street."
Opponents of gun control have questioned the value of gun buyback programs, saying most criminals wouldn't turn in their weapons.
