I wasn't surprised by any of the candidate results, except the margin of victory for Meg Whitman over Steve Poizner. However, I did expect the two industry-backed propositions to prevail. Given the millions that PG&E and Mercury Insurance pumped into the respective campaigns for Props 16 and 17, I thought they'd probably pass.
To what do you attribute the votes on 16 and 17? Did the huge campaigns backfire? Did voters study up on them and determine the measures would benefit the companies more than the public? Is there anything that's a take-away for future initiative campaigns?
I'd also like to read your analysis on the upcoming candidate races. I learn a lot from listener conjecture on what we'll see and how voters will react to the candidates.
