That was a big part of my conversation Wednesday morning with the co-author of Spousonomics: Using Economics to Master Love, Marriage, and Dirty Dishes. Paula Szuchman explained how economic principles could effectively be used to manage household disagreements – including over the frequency of sex.
I expressed my skepticism over trading household chores for sex, given that it makes affection mercenary. However, one of our callers was astonished and disapproving that I didn’t know the joys of bartered sex.
What’s particularly interesting is the process for quantifying couples’ disagreements. Just taking stock in that manner seems to pave the way for an equitable way of negotiating competing needs.
