It was the leg drop heard ’round the world. At Sunday night’s Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, R&B singer Miguel managed to drop a giant pro wrestling leg drop on two fans.
While singing the song “Adorn,” Los Angeles-native Miguel took a leap over the crowd — and landed on a couple of women. One of the women took that leg drop straight over her neck.
Here’s the jump with slow motion replay:
Miguel looked to be trying to leap from one part of the stage to another, but he came up a bit short. Still, Miguel took “the show must go on” to heart, as he kept on going and finished the song.
Billboard and Miguel took to Twitter to say that at least one of the women was OK:
got caught up in the moment, thank goodness Khyati is okay— Miguel (@MiguelUnlimited) May 20, 2013
Billboard played it off, posting an animated GIF of Miguel with one of the fans laughing about it afterward on Tumblr:
In a story on its website, Billboard conceded that at least one fan was bruised. According to Billboard, his right leg landed on one woman’s head while his left side hit another fan’s arm. The fan who Miguel took backstage afterward, Khyati, was holding an ice pack on her arm. There is no further word on the other fan’s condition.
“Well, I think it’s kind of clear what happened,” Miguel told Billboard. “But I’m very happy to bring my new friend, Khyati, we just met . Unfortunately we did not meet under the best circumstances, but I think we’re OK.”
When asked what she thought of Miguel, Khyati’s enthusiasm didn’t seem diminished — “I ‘adorn’ him,” she said, referencing Miguel’s hit song.
Miguel said that the jump was improvised.
“The crazy thing is, when you’re performing and you’re just kind of into it, you never know where it’s gonna go and where you’re gonna go with it, and how that might turn out,” he told Billboard. “So this is one of the less favorable moments.”
A number of fans took to YouTube, noting the similarity of what Miguel did to the pro wrestling leg drop move and adding pro wrestling commentary in several versions of the video.
Miguel was nominated at the show for R&B Song of the Year for “Adorn,” but lost out to Rihanna’s “Diamonds.”
In case you want to check out Miguel’s song he was supposed to be performing without seeing anyone getting injured, here’s the official music video:
Miguel is also featured on legendary singer/“American Idol” judge Mariah Carey’s new single “#Beautiful” (yes, the hashtag is part of the song’s name, and no, it sadly is not pronounced in the song itself):
