Desert intruder helps himself to champagne and a meal before hitting the shower

Sheriff’s deputies apprehended a naked man at gunpoint Thursday night as he lathered up in the shower of someone else’s home in Joshua Tree -- and after he’d helped himself to a meal and a nice bottle of champagne.

San Bernardino County sheriff's Sgt. Steve Wilson told the Associated Press that Michael Calvert, 25, was found in a family home after the owners returned at 8:10 p.m., heard him in the shower, and called 911.

Calvert, perhaps figuring that all properties out there are unoccupied these days, allegedly let himself in while the family was away. Like a wandering hermit coming in out of the desert, he helped himself in the kitchen before hitting the shower.

Calvert is in jail on burglary charges; his bail is set at $25,000.

The Joshua Tree community is a cluster of 10,000 or so people living in the Mojave Desert. It is best known as for its neighboring Joshua Tree National Monument, and as the place where Gram Parsons’ body was burned.
