A man in Palmdale was arrested after allegedly holding his stepson’s head underwater for too long -- because the boy wasn’t taking to his swim lessons fast enough.

At around 7 p.m. Sunday, Jacqorie Stansell, 21, was giving his 7-year-old stepson a swim lesson in an apartment complex swimming pool in Palmdale, according to L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies. When the boy wasn’t learning fast enough, Stansell, apparently a fan of the “tough love” approach, began holding his head underwater repeatedly for as long as 15 seconds at a time, according to KTLA.

The boy stopped breathing and paramedics were called. They managed to revive him, and he was transported to an area hospital.

Although the boy’s condition was not immediately known, KTLA reported that both he and his sister -- who was upstairs with their mother at the time -- have been given over to protective services.

Stansell was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is being held on $1 million bail.
