Fiona Apple wrote a heartbreaking, hand-written letter announcing that she will be postponing tour dates to care for her dying dog, Janet, a pitbull she rescued almost 14 years ago in Echo Park.

[She] was found in Echo Park, with a rope around her neck, and bites all over her ears and face. She was the one the dogfighters use to puff up the confidence of the contenders...I've never seen her start a fight, or bite, or even growl, so I can understand why they chose her for that awful role. She's a pacifist.

Janet has a tumor in her chest and suffers from a condition called Addison's disease. In recent days her health has apparently worsened, and Apple believes she is close to dying.

I can't come to South America. Not now...If I go away again, I’m afraid she'll die and I won't have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out."

Describing her extremely close relationship with her pet, Apple called her dog her best friend, mother, daughter, benefactor and "the one who taught me what love is."

Janet has been the most consistent relationship of my adult life, and that is just a fact. We've lived in numerous houses, and jumped a few make shift families, but it's always really been the two of us.

Billboard reports that it's unclear exactly what shows will be affected. Her website has not yet updated the tour calendar.  The artist addressed wouldbe concert goers about the change of plans and asked them to please understand.

"These are the choices we make, which define us. I will not be the woman who puts her career ahead of love and friendship.

During the North American tour for The Idler Wheel (Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do), Apple hit a bit of trouble when she was held by Texas authorities on suspicion of hashish possession.
