AP reports that Los Angeles County will bury the unclaimed cremated remains of 1,656 people in a mass grave at the L.A. County Crematory and Cemetery in Boyle Heights on Wednesday.

Supervisor Don Knabe was quoted by CNS as saying the deceased had no one but the county to provide a respectful burial. Knabe remarked that some of the individuals were homeless, some had no families to grieve for them and many were poor.

A moment of silence was observed by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors at a meeting on Tuesday.
