Social media’s fast becoming the go-to place for all kinds of news – including the bad and dangerous kind. So what happens when disaster strikes? When crime occurs down the street? First-responders, city officials, and law enforcement are now using Facebook and Twitter to issue updates and manage citizen queries. But it’s a relatively young process that the press and the public can help improve. The question is: How? On Wednesday, March 14th, KPCC’s Kim Bui (social media editor) hosted special guests Tom Leveque (Arcadia Police Department), Brian Humphrey (Public Service Officer, LAFD), Sal LaBarbera (Detective, Los Angeles Police Department) who addressed how social media is being used by government agencies; what the reaction has been to online tools; and where journalists and regular people fit in to the info-spreading picture.
