Three board members &ndash two of them newly elected &ndash took the oath of office at the LA Unified School District this afternoon.

Voters re-elected Monica Garcia to a second four-year term representing the district’s eastside. The school board gave her another year as its president.

Monica Garcia: "We should not let the gloom of the budget cloud the spirit of reform that we have fought for, and that we are responding to in our communities. I’ve been on the streets of L.A. L.A. is not going to satisfy itself with 50 percent graduation. That is not acceptable."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presided over the swearing in and praised Garcia’s leadership. During the public comment period, critics said Garcia and other board members haven’t done enough to protect schools from budget cuts. Activists outside school board chambers said Garcia and other board members who’d approved laying off thousands of teachers should be recalled from office.
