Friends and fans’ tributes to the late Michael Jackson punctuated his memorial at Staples Center.

Singer Diana Ross and former South African president Nelson Mandela sent their appreciations although they could not attend. So did poet Maya Angelou – actor and rapper Queen Latifah read her offering during the ceremony.

Queen Latifah: "Today in Tokyo, underneath the Eiffel Tower, in Guyana’s Black Star Square and Pittsburgh, in Birmingham, Alabama and Birmingham, England, we are missing Michael Jackson. But we do know we had him and we are the world."

Several speakers during the event recalled the creative and good-humored man behind the sequined glove, whose music and dance moves entertained millions around the globe.
