In Claremont tonight, Southern California Edison’s scheduled a workshop for homeowners interested in rooftop solar systems.

Bob Botkin is Edison’s manager for the California Solar Initiative. He says that anyone who’s interested in generating energy on top of a house should learn how to conserve energy inside it.

Bob Botkin: "They should be looking at all their total energy use picture because it normally is a much better economic payback to do an energy efficiency measure and reduce the amount of energy you need for your solar system than it is for you to just put a big solar system on an inefficient house."

Botkin says some local agencies have worked to streamline the solar permitting process. Los Angeles County Public Works recently announced that it would cut fees for solar construction permits in the region.
