The Los Angeles City Council plans to vote this week on whether a one-square-mile area of Van Nuys can rename itself Sherman Oaks.

While many of the 1,855 homeowners in that parcel identify with the adjacent area, Jill Banks Barad, president of the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council, says “no way.”

Jill Banks Barad: “I think at the heart of it are property values and elitism. I think that these people are saying you know we’re better than most people in Van Nuys. And as a matter of fact, the leader of this, Laurette Healey, said several times during the public hearing, she said ‘we’re of common complexion and values as the people in Sherman Oaks, so we oughta be called Sherman Oaks.'"

Barad told KPCC’s "Patt Morrison" that the Van Nuys homeowners agitating for the change want nothing less than to annex themselves to Sherman Oaks.
