While the health care reform debate rages, advocates of patient safety have been pushing for changes to cut the number of medical errors in hospitals.

Actor Dennis Quaid has stepped forward as a kind of spokesman for the cause after his new born twins were nearly killed. In a medical mistake, the babies were given 1000 times the dose of blood thinner as they were supposed to receive.

Quaid was one of several people honored last night by the Los Angeles public interest group Consumer Watchdog. He talked with KPCC's Shirley Jahad.
