Students protest removal of high school teacher

About 300 students at John Marshall High School in Los Feliz protested the removal of popular teacher Larry Welch from his duties, marking the second protest regarding Welch in the past two weeks.

"He got reassigned with no explanation," senior David Conway told KNX Newsradio. "We were given no warning. They gave us no teachers to replace him."

School principal Daniel Harrison said Welch "has been removed from the school due to an investigation, and we hope that we can return soon," but he declined to elaborate on the nature of the investigation.

Many of the students missed their first two classes and will have to make up the work, consistent with each teacher's classroom policy, Harrison noted.

Welch was teaching several honors and Advanced Placement courses, as well as coaching the school's academic decathlon team.

Last Tuesday, about 150 students protested Welch's removal.
