An underdog hit scores the top of the box office this weekend.

It is unusual for a studio movie to open strong and then rise to become number one its third weekend out. Most often films sink considerably after opening weekend.

The Blind Side is the football inspired drama that has gained ground at the box office. It stars Sandra Bullock as a woman who takes in a homeless teen.

Warner Brothers executives say they haven’t seen anything like it before.

The movie brought more than $20 million this weekend for a total of nearly $130 million.

The number two movie this weekend is the blockbuster bloodsucker love story The Twilight Saga: New Moon. It has reached a worldwide total of more than 570 million.

Also making a strong showing in limited release is the George Clooney movie Up in the Air. The Paramount pic about a businessman doing the dirty work for downsizing companies has won Oscar buzz.
