Carson man sentenced to death for stabbing, killing elderly couple

Carson man Anthony Cain was sentenced to death today for stabbing to death elderly couple Ernestine and Lamar Matthews during a robbery in their Cerritos home six years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced this morning.

The judge denied the defense's motion to reduce the jury's recommendation to life in prison without parole.

The jury sentenced Cain to death in November. The same jury earlier convicted Cain of first-degree murder.

The victims were both 75 years old. Cain was related to the elderly couple through marriage.

The couple had planned to travel on a fundraising trip to an Indian casino near San Diego on the morning of Feb. 11, 2004, when their bodies were discovered.

Ernestine Matthews was a former teacher in the Compton Unified School District. Lamar Matthews was a retired parole officer. They were planning to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary later that year.
