Forecasters: Big waves to hit some Southland beaches tonight

The big swells are expected to reach around Point Conception and send large breakers ashore in Los Angeles County tonight and Sunday, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service said surf in the 7-9 foot range, with occasional 10-foot breakers, will come ashore on west-facing beaches tonight.

Such locations include Zuma Beach, and the South Bay beaches from Torrance north to Marina del Rey.

The high surf will subside Sunday, the Weather Service said.

The strong swells near San Francisco prompted the world's best surfers to rush to the Mavericks break near Half Moon Bay, where 50-foot waves were predicted to come ashore.
