Bike messengers chase down thief in downtown LA

Police say two bicycle messengers took off on a high-speed pursuit of a suspected bike thief, chasing him for five blocks on busy downtown Los Angeles streets until they retrieved the stolen bike.

Cmdr. Andrew Smith said the couriers spotted someone steal a mountain bike from in front of a gym on Friday and gave chase.

They dashed across busy streets and along sidewalks crowded with pedestrians until one of the messengers grabbed the man's shirt and pulled him to the ground.

The thief fled on foot while the messengers grabbed the $500 bike.

Police say bike thefts are on the rise.

Smith says police are looking for a 30-year-old man with a torn shirt, possibly a sprained ankle and road rash.
