Supporters of public schools and universities in the Los Angeles area have organized a range of protest activities today. Orange County educators say education funding problems also plague their region.

Parents, teachers, and school administrators formed the Orange County Education Coalition.

They’ve organized after-school rallies today at a dozen sites, including Huntington Beach, Anaheim, and Laguna Hills.

Suzie Swartz, a board member at Saddleback Valley Unified, says the demonstrators want to let policymakers know Orange County schools are struggling.

"We’ve had to eliminate so many high school counselors that we have one counselor for every 1,200 students," she said. "We have had to continually raise class size in the elementary level. We have gone from 20-1 to 24-1 and that is increasing."

Swartz says Sacramento lawmakers could help school districts handle budget problems by ending restrictions on much of the money the state directs toward education.
