LA County DA wants further investigation into baby's death

Prosecutors declined today to file a case - pending further investigation - against a woman accused of giving birth at a Redondo Beach home where she attended a party and disposing of the baby's body in a trash can.

In a charge evaluation worksheet, Deputy District Attorney Christi Frey noted that the "coroner's office has not yet determined cause of death and has not yet ruled the death a homicide."

The prosecutor added that further testing is being conducted by the coroner's office and will not be completed for two to three weeks.

Jessie Lauren Canfield, 24, of Santa Barbara, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the newborn's death.

Police said they identified the 2004 Redondo Union High School graduate as the woman who allegedly gave birth to the girl at a Redondo Beach home while attending a party there over the weekend and then disposed of the infant in a trash can at the residence.

Police said the woman had complained of cramping and other discomfort.

The baby's body was found by a trash collector about 9 a.m. Wednesday inside the trash can in the 700 block of North Irena Ave.

Canfield told investigators that she did not know she was pregnant, the Daily Breeze reported.
