Gardena police seek attempted kidnapper

Gardena police sought the public's help today to identify a suspect wanted in connection with two kidnapping attempts in the South Bay in the last two weeks.

On March 2, a 20-year-old college student was walking home in the area of 156th Street and Atkinson Avenue in Gardena around 9:30 a.m. when she was approached by a man in a bright red, newer model pickup truck, said Lt. Steve Prendergast of the Gardena Police Department.

The man tried to lure her into his vehicle and gave chase as she ran away. He finally fled, Prendergast said.

The man was described as white, about 45, with tanned skin and wavy shoulder-length dirty blond hair.

Four days earlier on Feb. 26, a kidnapping attempt of a 9-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother was reported in Redondo Beach, Prendergast said.

"The suspect description is similar in both cases," Prendergast said Monday.

The man and his pickup truck remained unaccounted for today, Gardena police Sgt. Damaso Bautista said.

Anyone with information on the suspect was urged to call Gardena police at (310) 217-9607.
