Acidic powder leaks from cargo container at Port of LA

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel sent to the Port of Los Angeles today determined that no one was injured aboard a ship where a chemical described as a "dry acid-type powder" leaked from a cargo container.

Firefighters and paramedics were sent to Berth 303 about 3:30 a.m. to examine up to 16 members of a crew arriving from India after a 40-foot shipping container sprung a leak, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Mark Jauregui of the Harbor Station.

A hazmat squad boarded the ship, and found that the powder apparently was inert, and that no one was injured, a fire department spokesperson said.
