Athletics coach arrested for alleged sex with minor

A 39-year-old athletics coach at 32nd Street USC Math, Science and Technology High School was behind bars today on suspicion of having sex with a 17-year-old female student.

Cesar Ysidro Fernandez, who was arrested Tuesday, remains jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail. The 39-year-defendant is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse on four felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse.

The criminal complaint alleges that the crimes occurred last Aug. 31, Sept. 25, Nov. 8 and Jan. 3.

Detectives learned that the sex may have started during the 2009 summer break, when the student was 17, police said. The age of consent in California is 18.

Fernandez has been a teacher since 1993, and had been at the 32nd Street school since 1996, according to police.

Fernandez was the athletic director and a full-time teacher at the time of the allegations. He taught various courses and coached basketball and volleyball. Fernandez also taught summer school at Carson High School.

Anyone with more information about the case was asked call detectives at the Southwest Station at (213) 485-2585, or the department's 24-hour tipline, (877) LAPD-24-7.
