State Sen. Romero joins UC Berkeley speaker boycott

BERKELEY — State Sen. Gloria Romero is canceling her graduation speech at the University of California, Berkeley to show solidarity with UC workers.

The chair of the Senate Education Committee said Wednesday that she will not speak at Saturday's UC Berkeley Latino student graduation ceremony.

She's the latest speaker to join the UC boycott called by low-wage workers and student organizations.

Former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg did not speak at the UC Berkeley political science department graduation on Monday as planned, and author Karen Joy Fowler won't be addressing English Department graduates. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez also canceled her UC Riverside graduation speech.

UC workers are protesting mandatory reductions in work hours that they say have resulted in smaller paychecks.
