Missing infant found with mother's former girlfriend at Anaheim motel

EL MONTE — An infant taken from an El Monte motel early Tuesday morning was found today in Orange County, along with her mother's former girlfriend, police said.

Aleena Bustamontes, who needs medication for an ear infection, was allegedly taken by Monica Mendoza, 42, who was found with the toddler in Anaheim this afternoon, said El Monte police Detective Ralph Batres, who said the child was in good condition.

Mendoza will be facing charges, he said.

The woman and child disappeared about 1 a.m. Tuesday from the Siesta Motel, 10327 Garvey Ave. It was unclear where they had been before being found.

El Monte police called Anaheim authorities this afternoon, saying they had gotten a tip that the suspect's 2001 Honda Accord had run out of gas on Empire Street and Chalet Avenue near Modjeska Park, said Anaheim police Sgt. Rick Martinez.

"When we got there, we found the vehicle and the woman was walking down the street toward (a) gas station with the baby,'' Martinez said.

She was carrying a gas can as she walked westbound on Ball Road approaching Brookhurst Street, Martinez said.

"We brought her back to the park and waited for El Monte police to pick her up,'' Martinez said.
