Off-duty police officer hurt in freeway crash

An off-duty Alhambra police officer riding a motorcycle has been critically hurt in a freeway crash with a big-rig on Interstate 605 in the Whittier area.

The crash occurred at about 8 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the San Gabriel River Freeway near Whittier Boulevard. Los Angeles County Fire spokesman Matt Levesque says the motorcyclist was unconscious.

California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos says both sides of the freeway were closed at 8:30 a.m. so a Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter could land and airlift the injured officer to County-USC Medical Center. The freeway reopened a short time later.

Alhambra police Lt. Ron Andreas confirms the motorcyclist is an off-duty officer but he has no other details.
