14-year-old girl shot, killed while watching fireworks in Pico-Union

Police today sought the gunman who fatally shot a 14-year-old girl watching fireworks in the Pico-Union district just west of downtown.

The girl, whose name was being withheld, was in the 1300 block of South Toberman Avenue when some suspected gang members started shooting at one another about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, according to police and broadcast reports.

"The girl was in a group, watching the fireworks, when a group of four or five suspects rode up on bicycles and began firing," Los Angeles police Sgt. Michael Mabie said.

"We believe they were gang members shooting at rival gang members but they missed them and hit the girl," Mabie said.

Anti-gang detectives asssigned to the Rampart Station were tying to identify which gang or gangs the shooters were from, he said.

A bullet hit the girl under an arm, according to broadcast reports. The girl was declared dead at hospital.
