Oakland councilwomen investigated in protest

Two Oakland council members are among those being investigated for their decision to join a human line that blocked police during protests following the verdict for a white former Bay Area Rapid Transit officer who shot and killed an unarmed black man.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports this morning that Oakland police are investigating Councilwomen Jean Quan and Rebecca Kaplan for their participation in the June 8 street protests. Police spokesman Jeff Thomason says Quan and Kaplan aren't exempt from the incident investigation.

Prosecutors have already filed charges against nine people. Some 78 people were arrested.

A Los Angeles jury convicted Johannes Mehserle of involuntary manslaughter instead of second-degree murder for killing Oscar Grant last year.
