[Updated] LA Mayor Villaraigosa has surgery to fix elbow broken in bicycle accident

An aide to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says the mayor has undergone surgery to repair an elbow broken in a bicycle accident on Saturday.

Spokeswoman Sarah Hamilton said in a statement that the mayor had surgery Sunday at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center.

She says the surgery was a success, the mayor is expected to make a full recovery and he'll attempt to resume a full schedule next week.

The Los Angeles Times quotes his spokesman as saying the injury occurred on Venice Boulevard in Mid-City at about 6:50 p.m. when a taxi abruptly pulled in front of him. The mayor hit his brakes and fell off the bike.

He was transported to Ronald Reagan/UCLA Medical Center, where he was treated for the broken bone

The Times reported that by 10 p.m. he had been released and was resting comfortably at his official residence.
