NORTHRIDGE — A 51-year-old woman was fatally injured in Reseda today when a suspected drunken driver struck her after she had exited her vehicle in front of a driveway of a Reseda residence. A 5-year-old child was also thrown from the vehicle and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.
The collision at Strathern Street and Wilbur Avenue occurred shortly after 2 a.m., according to Los Angeles police Officer John Holliday of the Valley Traffic Division.
Chandrika de Silva was walking to the rear of her 2007 Prius when she was struck by a 2005 Jeep Cherokee driven by 22-year-old Richard Bultron. De Silva was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Bultron crashed into de Silva and the rear of the Prius, which was sticking out into Strathern Street as the Prius' male driver opened the gate to the driveway, Holliday said. De Silva had exited the vehicle and had walked toward the rear of the vehicle when she was struck.
The impact killed the woman, overturned the vehicle and threw the boy out, he said. The boy was in a car seat at the time of the collision.
Los Angeles firefighters airlifted the boy from Cleveland High School to Childrens Hospital, where he was being treated for serious injuries.
Bultron was shortly hospitalized before being released and booked at the Van Nuys jail for felony DUI, vehicular manslaughter.
