Communities celebrate 'National Night Out' anti-crime event

Elected officials, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses and residents will gather at various locations across the Southland tonight for the annual National Night Out, an event aimed at promoting neighborhood spirit and partnership between the police and the community.

National Night Out is in its 27th year. Organizers say the peace marches, block parties and other events enhance the relationship between communities and the police officers who watch over their neighborhoods.

The Los Angeles Police Department will hold events across the city, including Hollywood, Woodland Hills, Hollenbeck, Eagle Rock, Chinatown, West Los Angeles and Northridge.

Events are also scheduled in Pomona, San Gabriel, Hawaiian Gardens and Gardena.

In Valinda, Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina and the Sheriff's Department Industry Station will feature an event at Rimgrove Park featuring a march, game booths, face painting, watermelon eating and pie throwing contests, live musical performances and giveaways.
