California jobless rate remains stagnant

California showed few signs of economic recovery last month as the state's unemployment rate remained stagnant at 12.3 percent.

The state Employment Development Department said today that the jobless rate in July was unchanged from the previous month.

For the second month in a row, California reported a net loss in jobs, with a decrease of 9,400 non-farm positions. Most of those were temporary jobs with the Census Bureau. The state added 21,000 jobs in other areas, with education and health services seeing the biggest boost.

The national unemployment rate also remained unchanged from June to July, hovering at 9-and-a-half percent.
