California nonprofits battle for historic Navy ship

The World War II-era battleship USS Iowa has long since been out of service, but it's fighting days are not yet over.

Two California nonprofits — one in Los Angeles, the other in the San Francisco Bay area — are vying to host the decommissioned ship as a tourist attraction.

The Historic Ships Memorial at Pacific Square is based about 30 miles northeast of San Francisco in Vallejo and wants the ship to be moored on nearby Mare Island.

The Los Angeles-based Pacific Battleship Center says the ship should be located in the community of San Pedro. The U.S. Navy is expected to make a decision within a few months.
